Under Canvas is a one-of-a-kind glamping company, seamlessly blending outdoor adventure with resort-style amenities at properties situated near national parks and scenic locales across the United States. Their Smoky Mountains location lies nestled within a 200-acre forested area just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cosby, Tennessee.

This picturesque setting provides easy access to the ancient mountain landscape while still pampering guests with luxurious tents and resort-like services. As avid hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who also enjoys our creature comforts, we couldn’t wait to experience Under Canvas Smoky Mountains first-hand.

Overall Impression

After a rejuvenating two-night stay, we can happily report our experience at Under Canvas Smoky Mountains exceeded expectations. From cozy tent accommodations to stargazing while eating s’mores beside the campfire to excellent food and service, Under Canvas delivered a quintessential glamping escape that paired natural beauty with modern convenience.

The friendly yet unobtrusive service allowed us to feel immersed in the serenity of the Smokies while enjoying resort-style amenities. We came away completely recharged, and we unequivocally recommend Under Canvas as the perfect glamping experience for adventures in the Smoky Mountains.

The Tents

The safari-style canvas tents are the crown jewel of the Under Canvas experience. Their thoughtful design blends seamlessly with the surroundings while still providing plenty of indoor comforts. The heavy-duty tents sit propped on elevated hardwood platforms, keeping you off the forest floor (and away from any pesky critters!).

Inside, the spacious layout includes a plush king bed piled with blankets and pillows so comfort is king even while camping. There’s ample floor space to spread out your luggage and a side lounge area furnished with a chairs, side table and wood burner for extra warmth on chilly Smoky Mountain nights.

The rustic-chic decor with wooden accents pairs perfectly with the natural surroundings when you roll up the curtained doors to enjoy the views.

Our Deluxe tent’s private ensuite bathroom was another welcome feature, with a spacious shower, flush toilet, and vanity providing all the hygiene necessities. Small touches like organic eco-friendly toiletries created a resort-like vibe.

The accommodations struck the ideal balance between outdoorsy charm and indulgent comforts!

Despite some minor sounds traveling between tents, the furnishings and layout promoted some of the best sleep I’ve had glamping or camping. We awoke feeling refreshed and ready for a day out hiking in the Smokies.

For those seeking both outdoor adventure and indulgent relaxation, these tents deliver!

In addition to the phenomenal tents, Under Canvas Smoky Mountains supplies plenty of amenities to round out your glamping experience.

There’s a main lodge housing the check-in desk, daily updates on weather in the Smokies, a gift shop stocked with camping supplies and Under Canvas swag, and plenty of indoor dining tables and comfortable couches.

A nice touch is the collection of board games you can borrow. With no WiFi available you are forced to disconnect and enjoy a welcome change from casually browsing your social media accounts!

There is an expansive outdoor area with tables and outdoor games and each evening there is a different activity such as trivia or live music to enjoy.

And of course, there are firepits, perfect for making s’more making beneath the stars! To encourage guest interaction each firepit has plenty of seating so you can chat with other Under Canvas guests and share tips on the hikes and adventures in the area.

One of my favorite amenities was the dining experience, Under Canvas offers a seasonal menu that changes so that they can offer locally sourced meals and snacks. Our favorite option on the menu was the charcuterie board which we ordered more than once!

Another nice touch, that differs from other luxury escapes is that they don’t price you in and overcharge. The pricing was reasonable, you can bring your own wine to enjoy, and there are barbeques if you would like to cook up your own meals. Plus, they give away complementary s’mores every evening and complementary coffee, tea and botanical-infused water.

Under Canvas truly provides quality dining in a beautiful, social, and convenient camping setting. You can check out the sample breakfast menu and dinner menu to see the types of meals on offer at camp.

Location, Location, Location

Arguably Under Canvas’s most valuable asset is its phenomenal location in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. Just a short drive from the camp, you can enter the trails, rivers, and forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The endless hiking possibilities are a nature lover’s dream with over 800 miles of trails ripe for exploring. We were near famous routes like Huskey Gap Trail, Alum Cave Trail, and the Appalachian Trail (which does require a permit), plus off-the-beaten-path options. With so much gorgeous terrain, it was hard to choose where to start.

While feeling totally immersed in nature, the camp provides easy access to nearby conveniences too. The towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge with attractions, shops, and dining were about a 30-minute drive away. Whether you prefer rugged adventure or relaxing amenities, Under Canvas’s location provides the best of both worlds.

Activities Galore

Given how close it is to the national park, Under Canvas naturally offers outstanding activities to experience the Smokies.

Under Canvas can also arrange guided adventures like hiking tours, driving tours and white-water rafting. Prices were reasonable, and the guides were clearly experienced outdoor vets with a passion for these mountains.

Bringing the gear and expertise for pursuing activities makes it easy for guests to fully embrace the surroundings. Of course, if you prefer total relaxation, simply grabbing a book and finding a cozy nook is heavenly too thanks to the picture-perfect setting.

Standout Service

While the location and activities enthralled us, the superb staff at Under Canvas stole the show.

From the front desk employees who checked us in and helped plan our days to the attentive waitstaff at meals to the knowledgeable guides, every person we interacted with enhanced the experience.

The team perfectly toes the line between providing gracious service while maintaining the casual, communal vibe of a campground.

The guides offered pro tips for photographing elusive mountain wildlife that really paid off. And the bartenders at the Canteen will happily grab you a cocktail to enjoy at the nightly bonfire. The whole staff truly makes you feel at home.
