Escape To: Under Canvas, Lake Powell – Grand Staircase

Introduction

Tucked within the red rock country of southern Utah near the Arizona border lies an exceptional luxury camping destination, Under Canvas Lake Powell.

This glamping retreat provides upscale safari tent accommodations located to nearby Lake Powell, the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States.

In this detailed review, we’ll take you inside the Under Canvas Lake Powell experience. From the spacious safari-style tents to exhilarating area activities and top-notch hospitality, Under Canvas creates a one-of-a-kind basecamp for adventures in Utah’s canyon country.

Luxury Safari Tents Offer Comfort in Untamed Nature

The highlight of any stay at Under Canvas is undoubtedly the thoughtfully designed lodging. Guests reside in spacious safari-style tent suites outfitted with indulgent details you would expect of a high-end boutique hotel.

Despite the rugged wilderness setting, the tents provide comfort on par with upscale accommodations.

The stylish canvas tents sit on raised hardwood platforms surrounded by Utah’s red rock vistas. Inside, the tent features a king or queen bed with plush linens and multiple pillows. There’s also a cozy lounge area with leather West Elm furniture and a gas stove for extra warmth on chilly desert nights.

Each tent has an attached ensuite bathroom with a hot pull-chain shower, flushing toilet, and a rustic vanity sink. With conveniently placed USB-powered lighting, the tents artfully blend outdoorsy charm with indulgent comforts.

Deluxe Tents

The Deluxe Tents are the standard / cheapest tent option; however, they still deliver on the luxe glamping experience and we recommend these as a perfect option for a couple or friends to share.

There is a cozy interior seating area and a wood-burning stove with complimentary firewood keeps the tent cozy on chillier nights. Outside, there is a private deck with small table chairs, perfect for unwinding at the end of a long day out in Lake Powell.

Suite Tents

The Suite Tents are the epitome of luxury in the heart of nature. They feature all the amenities of a Deluxe Tent, king size bed, wood burner, private bathroom, and outside deck.

The added bonus in the suite tent is the separate lounge area, complete with a queen-size sofa bed.

Stargazer Tents

For couples seeking an elevated outdoor experience, the Stargazer Tent is a perfect choice. It offers the same amenities as the Deluxe Tent but adds a special feature: a night sky viewing window positioned above the king-size bed.

Kids Tents

For families, Under Canvas has the added option of a private kids tent. These tipi-style tents feature two twin-size beds with luxe linens and are conveniently positioned adjacent to the main tent for kids under 18.

Each Kids Tent includes a side table with a USB-powered lantern and fan, as well as outdoor seating for added convenience.

Tent Amenities

Bathroom and Shower: The shower is a pull shower, meaning you have to pull on the handle to release water which saves on energy and water use. The water may start off cold, but give it a minute and you will get some hot water come through!

Toiletries: The shower comes with organic bath products including shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel.

Towels: There are two sets of bath and face towels in each Deluxe Tent.

Power: The tent comes equipped with rechargeable USB power banks that can be used to power the lanterns and fans, as well as your devices such as a phone or kindle. There are no sockets in the tent, but you can sometimes find sockets in the shared main tent to power a laptop. For drying hair there are bathrooms by the main tent you can use which each have a power socket.

Lanterns: Each tent has three lanterns, one on each side of the bed and a smaller bathroom lantern over the sink. These provide ample light in the room in the evenings. You will also find a light over the deck.

Shared Amenities Foster Community

In addition to the well-appointed tents, Under Canvas Lake Powell offers stylish community areas for relaxing after adventures and adopting their goal of bringing guests #OutsideTogether.

At the Adventure Hub, guests can pick up something up from the grab refreshments area, order breakfast, lunch or dinner, book guided experiences led by the onsite Adventure Concierge team, sip their morning complementary coffee, or simply enjoy a book or a board game in the comfortable lounge area.

Outside the main lobby tent are shared communal spaces, including firepits, comfortable lounge chairs and dining tables. We recommend pitching up outside to watch the sunset over Lake Powell taking in the incredible pastel hues while toasting some marshmallows and makeing s’mores!

Visiting nearby Horseshoe Bend

No Lake Powell trip is complete without visiting famous Horseshoe Bend just 30 minutes south of the resort.

Here the emerald waters of the Colorado River take a dramatic U-shaped turn encircled by layered red cliffs. From the rim overlook, peer 1000 feet down onto the river’s smooth curve and sandy beaches dotted with vegetation.

There is plenty of parking, but there will be a charge of $10 for entry, and parking at Horseshoe Bend is not included with the America the Beautiful Pass. The walk out to the Horsehoe Bend overlook is flat and short, and easily accessible for most ages and abilities.

Visiting nearby Antelope Canyon

One of the Southwest’s most photographed slot canyons lies just 45 minutes from Under Canvas in Antelope Canyon.

To hike renowned Lower Antelope Canyon, you must join a guided tour on Navajo lands granted solely through authorized outfitters like Dixie’s Antelope Canyon Tours (who we did our tour with and recommend!) and next door Ken’s Lower Antelope Canyon Tours.

Their experienced Navajo guides usher small groups through the stunningly narrow orange-hued canyon illuminated by dancing beams of light. Guides share cultural insights and photography tips throughout the 1-2 hour tours.

With two sections to choose from, Upper Antelope focuses on light beams viewed from steep stairs while Lower has flatter terrain and colorful contours. Tours sell out fast, so book Antelope Canyon tours well in advance to ensure hiking this Instagram-famous canyon. Or customize private Antelope Canyon tours with Under Canvas’s Adventure Concierge for exclusive experiences.

On-site Elephant Slot Canyon Hike

If you are looking for a slot canyon closer to your tent, Under Canvas has its own private Elephant Slot Canyon canyon on-site, no guide required!

Unlike many other slot canyons in the area, the Elephant Slot Canyon while smaller and less impressive than Antelope is completely private on the Under Canvas property, so it doesn’t require any permits or a guide.

We were the only people there when we went on the short walk from the camp, giving us plenty of time for our own photoshoot (which is great if you are shy taking photos in front of other people!).
