Escape To: Torre Di Sopra, Tuscany

Nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany, just 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Florence, lies the beautifully restored medieval Torre Di Sopra. This historic property, which dates back to the 14th century, allows guests to experience the rich history and charm of authentic Tuscany while enjoying modern amenities and conveniences.

History That Surrounds You

Originally built as a watchtower in the 1300s, Torre Di Sopra has a well-documented history intertwined with famous Italians of the Middle Ages. The tower was constructed along a route used by pilgrims traveling from Florence to Rome, at the same time that Henry III was rebuilding Westminster Abbey in London.

The property transformed into a gentleman’s residence a century later, evidenced by the open loggia and original 14th century frescoes still visible in the dining room today. Historians believe the tower may have hosted notable Renaissance figures like Dante, Giotto, and Boccaccio as guests, given their friendships with the prestigious Peruzzi family who were patrons of the site.

Guests can immerse themselves in history across three levels of living space, enjoying panoramic views of olive groves dotting the Tuscan valleys below. The fenced grounds span 1.5 hectares, transporting you away from the hustle of modern life.

Architectural Significance

The extensive restoration of Torre Di Sopra was completed by acclaimed 20th century Italian architect Bruno Sacchi. Sacchi studied architecture at the University of Florence and went on to design famous sites like the Marino Marini Museum in Florence and collaborate on the Palazzo del Tau in Pistoia.

Sacchi’s restoration carefully preserved the medieval tower that predates even Florence’s iconic Duomo, providing an exceedingly rare opportunity to reside in a structure over 650 years old. The frescoes, particular choice of stone, and the original “tent” design formed by ermine fur shapes in the dining room exemplify fine medieval craftsmanship.

Staying at Torre Di Sopra allows you to experience Sacchi’s masterful blend of classic and contemporary architecture firsthand. His vision artfully restored the medieval charm while incorporating modern conveniences.

Another advantage of Torre Di Sopra’s location is the easy access it provides both to Florence’s treasures and Tuscany’s rugged landscapes. The property sits on the edge of the small village of Osteria Nuova, surrounded by countryside vistas and olive groves, with Antella just 2 km away.

Antella offers shops, markets, and other conveniences in an authentic Tuscan village setting. When visiting this small village be sure to stop at the following places:

  • Orto in Piazza – High quality fruits, vegetables and groceries.
  • Michele’s Shop – Wide selection of wines and fresh mozzarella.
  • Antella Butcher – Famed for meat selection and ready-made meals. Great summer panzanella salad.
  • Pasticceria Fiorella – Coffee, pastries, chocolates and gelato. The village hotspot.

You can easily take the bus from Antella into the heart of Florence, just 20 minutes away. By car, you can reach Florence in just 10 km from the villa and be standing in front of the Duomo’s intricate fa├žade in no time.

Day trips to Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, and the Mediterranean beaches are also readily achievable from this central location. You have the best of both worlds – a peaceful countryside retreat with Florence and Tuscany’s many treasures within easy reach.

Rooms and Accommodations

Torre Di Sopra provides a peaceful escape for groups up to 15 people across 7 bedrooms contained in the tower, courtyard, and adjacent casina.

The Artists Suite in the tower itself features frescoed walls, an ensuite bathroom, and access to the tower study/additional bedroom. We stayed in the Artists Suite and loved being up in such a historic tower with views over the Tuscan landscapes.

The Peruzzi Room, Courtyard Wing, and other bedrooms similarly blend historic charm with modern amenities.

Food & Drink

The villa offers two onsite kitchens so you can prepare you own meals or bring in a private chef if your budget allows! During our stay Torre Di Sopra arranged for a chef who had once cooked for the Dalai Lama to teach us how to make pasta which was a wonderful experience.

When it comes to sitting to enjoy your meal, there is a large indoor dining room for your evening meals, and an outdoor table to enjoy breakfast and lunch. We also enjoyed using this space for early evening aperitivo.
